262 Chairs showcases new drawings by Molly Stredwick alongside drawing and sculpture by Becky Hancock. Recent work by both artists has converged on imbuing household objects with anthropomorphic qualities that reflect underlying tensions within domestic scenes.

Stredwick’s repetitive series of small drawings of chairs, each made from a different sample of paper, simultaneously highlight the mundanity of the object whilst drawing our attention to the nuanced personalities of each image. This way, we are invited to contemplate the many situations or relationships that could be occurring outside the frame. Similarly, Hancock uses varying of distortion to create awkward depictions of chairs that balance humour with a melancholic sense of loneliness. Imprinting furniture with human characteristics that instil a tension between absence and presence reminds us of the potential dysfunctions that can arise within the home.
